![]() ![]() ![]() Is Moshfegh telling us that to build a character and a story so convincingly that the teller must lose themselves? Interesting to think about. As Vesta weaves the story of Magda and her death for us, she seems to be unraveling herself. ![]() The intrigue really builds as the characters we thought dwelled only in the protagonist’s mind seem to start to leak out into the real world. I think the line from the book, “A good detective presumes more than she interrogates,” pretty much sums up Vesta’s process. So begins Vesta’s journey into investigating the death of Magda. There is no sign of a body, a struggle, or anything suspicious other than the note on a torn piece of notebook paper. On one of their early morning walks in the birch wood across the street, Vesta and Charlie happen across the note that tells of Magda and her death neatly pinned to the ground with small black pebbles. Like most of Moshfegh’s characters, Vesta has chosen isolation and seeks solitude as comfort. ![]() Vesta Gul is a 72 year old transplant to a small town in the American north-east, a widow who has bought a cabin in the woods to spend the remainder of her time on a lake with her dog. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Everlynne is on the cusp of reinventing herself once again when the old wounds of her past are resurrected, rawer than ever. Those words couldn’t ring truer for Everlynne Lawson, whose first brush with romance came with a heartbreak…and the thing that seems to follow her everywhere she goes. They say first loves are oftentimes the end of one’s innocence. Shen comes a passion- and angst-charged story about a woman caught between a secure relationship and a once-in-a-lifetime spark with her muse. ![]() ![]() Twice already Marie had pointed out the brilliance of the autumnal sun on the perfect field of corn, because the brilliance of the autumnal sun on the perfect field of corn put her in mind of a haunted house-not a haunted house she had ever actually seen but the mythical one that sometimes appeared in her mind (with adjacent graveyard and cat on a fence) whenever she saw the brilliance of the autumnal sun on the perfect etc.
![]() ![]() In such a short amount of time, House gets readers invested in the main characters, their romance, as well as the side characters. What I loved most about this novella was the pacing. Of course, the one night stand doesn't last long as the two begin to grow feelings for each other. What ensues is a world wind adventure of spending weekends together fulfilling their physical desires. Set had a bad reputation in the past so she's initially hesitant about interacting with him, but the two find that they have a lot in common. The two reunite at a high school reunion when Kareema is left solo by a close friend. Set has such an interesting premise where readers follow Set and Kareema. ![]() I'm sad that I waited so long to start this book especially since I've read and love a good portion of what Alexandria House has done with her other books. Damn, damn, damn! Why ya'll aint tell me this book was this sexy?!? I was listening to the audiobook while working and silently praying that no one could hear what was coming out of my headphones. ![]() ![]() ![]() One afternoon, Stewart Copeland from The Police discovered them on the pier and interestingly enough sat in for a song. ![]() LILIAC paid their dues by playing songs for anyone and everyone who would stop and listen and in-turn built a grassroots following along the way. They started playing the Santa Monica pier (at a very young age) every weekend for over three years. One day he realized his kids were musically gifted too and in turn supported the formation of their band. Dad (Florian Cristea) always had a love for music and was successful in his own right. They passed on these these amazing traits to their children and they all flourished from day one. Hailing from Downey, California (about 20 miles from Los Angeles), mom and dad came to this country from Transylvania where they had humble beginnings and a traditional religious upbringing. The band consists of Samuel (20) guitar and backup vocals, Abigail (19) drums, Melody (17) vocals, Ethan (13) bass guitar, and Justin (11) keyboards. ![]() LILIAC means 'vampire bat' in Romanian and is a tribute to theirs parents who immigrated from Romania many years ago. The family band consists of two sisters and three bothers who are amazingly talented musicians yet oddly enough have flown under the radar for quite some time. It all started when I saw a YouTube video of a young band named LILIAC and found myself watching it over and over (and over). The last few months for me have been very busy and super exciting (to say the least). ![]() ![]() ![]() John sees a painting of a distant relative on the wall, dated several centuries back – a painting with cold, dead eyes. Melmoth the Wanderer opens with a student, John Melmoth, leaving college to attend to his uncle’s deathbed in a house on a clifftop by the coast. In 1820, he wrote to his friend the author Walter Scott, to say that he was working on a novel so terrifying that it would succeed in “out-Heroding all the Herods” of the German school of gothic authors – Schiller, Hoffmann, Goethe – who were enjoying popularity at the time. ![]() Maturin was a protestant Dubliner and an eccentric priest, prone to sermonising and fond of dancing. He had no shame in showing tears, no shame in feeling and showing heartache, and no shame in his love and devotion to the woman he loved. Hoffman bulldozed the typical toxic masculinity of the time period and made Samuel, the dashing pirate, the most sensitive, honest, and loving person of the entire book. Samuel Dias was one character that stood out the most to me in this book. Each character displayed this, no matter how unimportant, every character reflected the different ways that love (or lack of love) can affect a life and change it irrevocably.
